This month, I am so lucky to have some of my paintings hanging at a local joint in Minneapolis, MN, called The Riverview Cafe and Wine Bar in my local “Longfellow” neighborhood of south Minneapolis, at 3753 42nd Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55406.
The High Northern Plains Arts Community mourns the loss of one of it’s own this month, as Canadian/Minnesotan artist, Timothy Lionel Ray died, February 9th, 2012 at the age of 72.
Hey Everyone! Thanks to all who visited my studio during last week’s Longfellow Art Crawl (LOLA)! Much appreciated, and much obliged. I hope you had a great crawl, and saw many other studios… weren’t there close to 70 other sites? With over 100 other artists? Sure there were!
Greetings, Fellow Art Crawlers, Open Studio Spelunkers, Painting Patrollers, Art Strollers, and General Neighborhood Explorer Types. Won’t you please come to this year’s LOLA (League of Longfellow Artists) Longfellow Art Crawl in South Minneapolis’ famous Longfellow Neighborhood? This event is two days of open studio, usually in people’s houses, or perhaps studios, where you can truly see the art where it was made. You can talk to the artist for a long period of time too, if you’d like. I serve cheap wine and Grain Belt long necks or maybe Pabst Blue Ribbon tall boys.
Hello, Fellow Art Hounds, I wanted to take this time to remind you that my Solo Exhibition at The Rourke Art Gallery will be coming down in one weeks time! Yes, there is still time to see it, but you have to act quickly!

Greetings Art Fans! May I interest you in coming to an Art Exhibition? My first “one-man” exhibition in my home town will open in exactly ONE MONTH (July 8th) at the Rourke Art Gallery, 523 South 4th Street, Moorhead, MN! (http://www.therourke.org!) As you may well know, I have been furiously getting ready for this thing […]
How does your work use space? How does it relate to the surrounding space? My pieces tend to be close up views of the person in a traditional portrait or bust study. Often times, I will show the whole body, but usually on a large canvas. If I use a smaller canvas, the whole person […]
Is there a central image or idea in the work? My work is mostly the face portion of the portrait. Sometimes there may be the body, but usually just the bust and face. This can show the subject closer, and in more detail. Cropping the image also separates the person, separating the psychological aspects from […]
What does your work look like? My work consists of oil paintings, mainly figurative pieces. That means people, portraits, studies of men and women and their individual psyches, their souls. My work tries to represent the “real” person inside the skin. What are they really like? What KIND of person are they? I think I […]
I make art using oil paint on canvas. My paintings are usually imaginary portraits of sad people with dark emotions. I utilize my own memories and experiences as subject matter when I paint. Sometimes I have an exact idea of what I am about to paint. Other times, I just see what appears, adding and […]
My work is mostly figurative, portraying the subject in almost a “damaged goods” sort of way. While I may poke fun at some types of people, others I am more sympathetic towards. All in all, each portrait is a sad mixture of human frailty, innocence lost, addiction, misguided adventure, or just plain ugliness. Mankind takes […]
As you know, I am busy getting ready for my exhibition in July! But how do I pick which paintings to bring? Most of my paintings could be construed as comparable, mainly because they were painted by one artist, in my particular manner of working. Paintings from different timeframes may not look quite the same, […]
How do I start a painting? I have a few different methods to my madness… Sometimes I just jump right in without any notes, sketches or ideas and start working, covering the canvas, seeing what works, what doesn’t and developing what occurs accidentally. I even envision this to be the work of my unconscious brain, […]
I guess you could say that my paintings “poke a stick in the eye” of my subject matter. Sometimes I paint without that intention, but usually I want to say something about society or humankind and their choices, etc. Yeah, maybe I can be hypercritical, but everyone has their opinions, right? Maybe I try to […]
This is the first of many questions I am mulling over, while writing my statement. I think first and foremost, I get from art a satisfaction of being able to express myself in a way that others can also enjoy. Yes, I really am expressing viewpoints, thoughts, ideas, perspectives, etc. I have certain thoughts about […]
So, it could be said, that I am busy these days. I am painting every day in the Artcave. But, as well as painting, I am busy writing not just for this little blog, but for my artist statement. I have an artist statement already, but Alan Ochocki, my contact at the Rourke Art Gallery, […]
Greetings fellow Art Hounds! As you may or may not know, I am getting ready for my first one man exhibition in my home town of Moorhead, MN at the Rourke Art Gallery, (see photo). Now, I’ve had one man shows before, namely at the GK Gallery in Cooperstown, ND, before she closed her doors […]
Greetings fellow Art Spelunkers, and welcome again to “Notes From The Artcave”. (With apologies to Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and his “Notes From Underground”) For those of you who don’t know me, may I take the time to introduce myself? My name is Jeff Weispfenning. I am a 40 something artist, husband and blogger living in Minneapolis, […]
Welcome Everyone! Welcome to my little blog, entitled “Notes from the Artcave”. Not to be confused with the famous cave at Lascaux, France filled with Neanderthal paintings, the “Artcave” is the name of my basement studio, here in Minneapolis, MN. More than just a “man cave”, the Artcave is where I paint, listen to music, […]
